2016: Strategic PPA signed with private school, Pridwin

Next Renewable Generation (NrG) has successfully implemented a 32.45kWp Solar Photovoltaic (PV) system at Pridwin Preparatory school, based in Melrose, Johannesburg. The school recognized the importance of leading a sustainable future through practical example, educating the leaders of tomorrow of the need for preserving our environment.

The school will now be consuming approximately 30% of its power from sustainable energy, saving about 43 tons of CO2 per annum. This is the equivalent of powering a CFL lightbulb for 378 years or running an entire house for 3.3 years. This was all possible with zero capital expenditure from the school as a result of NrG’s revolutionary solution to the commercial and industrial markets.

The school has entered into a long term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with NrG where NrG owns, operates and maintains the Solar PV system. NrG then sells the power produced to the school at an agreed tariff and escalation rate for the duration of the contract. This allows the school to be environmentally conscious and be an exemplary leader in the education sector at zero cost, risk or hassle.

The PPA agreement is similar to that which consumers currently have with Eskom or their utility provider, except the cost of electricity is known. This allows the school to budget more accurately for future energy costs and will reap monetary savings in the years to follow. From day one, the school will be saving on electricity costs as NrG’s commitment to their clients is to meet or beat their current electricity tariff.

The school should be commended on their proactive approach and exemplary commitment to teaching through example. By having a working Solar PV plant on site, children can learn through a practical example and ignite their interest in renewable energy and renewable energy resources. As renewables is ultimately the future, this will provide Pridwin learners an added advantage in their knowledge base.
