NrG used its vast experience with agricultural industries to assess and advise on the energy consumption and savings opportunities at the KLK Upington Abattoir. The demand and supply sides of all the major energy users on site, like refrigeration and water heating, were analysed in detail. In addition, an energy baseline was developed to predict and track energy consumption, in line with the International Measurement & Verification Protocol (IPMVP). A noteworthy potential saving of 27% was identified through no, low and medium cost opportunities. The site’s willingness to implement improvement projects, including air curtain installations, variable speed drives (VSDs), power factor correction and solar hot water, is commendable. Solar Photovoltaic (PV) generation was recommended.
