Carbon Tax Readiness: Why Businesses Need to Act Now

By Next Renewable Generation

With Phase 2 of South Africa’s carbon tax framework now in effect, businesses need to take a more proactive approach to carbon management. Carbon-related costs, reporting expectations and stakeholder pressure are increasing, making carbon tax more than a compliance issue. It is now a strategic business consideration linked to operating costs, energy decisions, ESG reporting and long-term competitiveness

Carbon Tax Phasing Overview:

Phase one of Carbon Tax (June 2019 – December 2025) has come to an end. Its purpose was to introduce carbon tax to South Africa. To do this, a gradual rate increase and generous allowances were applied. Phase two (January 2026 – December 2030) has recently been implemented and with it comes an allowance reform, stricter thresholds, and carbon offset expansion. Phase three (2031 onwards) aims for a full alignment with National targets and will carve out a net-zero pathway for South Africa.

Forecasted Carbon Tax Rates:

Carbon Tax rates in 2026 are R308/tCO2e. This is a drastic phase two increase that is having ripple effects throughout companies from a strategic to an operational level.  The Projected rate in 2030 is R462/tCO2e (a 50% increase). Even though the tax rates are increasing at a high rate, there are still between 60%-85% reductions available through carbon tax allowances.
